I make my way through the restaurant and Marcel stands as I approach, he kisses me on the cheek. âHello.â
âHi.â I smile as I sit down.
âYou look beautiful.â
âOh.â I try to deflect the compliment. âHow are you?â
âIâve been better.â He forces a crooked smile.
An awkward silence falls between us.
We both go to speak at the same time and then both stop ourselves. âYou go first,â I offer.
âI donât know why we broke up, but I want to repair our relationship.â He grabs my hand over the table. âPlease tell me we can.â
âMarcel.â I let out a deep exhale.
Damn it.
âI have issues.â I sigh. âAnd itâs not fair to bring them into our relationship.â
âLike what?â
I stare at him as I try to think of a kind way to let him down. How the hell do I do this without hurting him?
âIs it something that I did?â
âNo.â
âThe proposalâ¦we can wait. If youâre not ready for marriage then thatâs okay.â
My heart drops and I squeeze his hand in mine. âSweetie, Iâm so sorry.â I swallow the lump in my throat. âI should never have accepted your wedding proposalâ¦but.â Oh God, this is the worst. âYou asked me in a public situation. What was I supposed to do?â
âSay no.â
âI would never humiliate you like that.â
âYou would just leave me after I had told everyone I know that we were engaged.â
âIâm so sorry. I wish I could turn back time, I wouldâve handled things so differently.â
âHow?â His eyes hold mine and I can tell heâs holding on to his temper by a tiny thread.
âI didnât realize we were anywhere in the marriage kind of spectrum. We had never talked about it, we didnât even live together.â I shrug. âWe only saw each other on the weekends.â
âBecause we were busy,â he snaps in an outrage.
âNo, it wasnât that at all. We had no urgency to see each other. I know you donât see it now, but you donât love me the right way either.â
âYou donât love me?â He gasps out loud as if surprised. âYou really donât love me?â
The people sitting at the tables around us are beginning to look over as they eavesdrop on our conversation. I have no idea why theyâre listening; this conversation is a complete nightmare. I donât want to hear it myselfâ¦and Iâm in it.
âWhat Iâm saying is,â I say softly, âI donât want to be in a relationship anymore and I didnât realize this until you proposed to me. Instead of feeling excited, all I could feel is panic and that it was wrong. I shouldnât be like that, and youâ¦.â Words fail me. âIâm just so, so sorry.â I squeeze his hand. âYou deserved so much better and I will never forgive myself for treating you the way I have.â
He lets out a deep sigh.
âI missed every sign, every cue that you gave me. I must have, because to be honest, Iâm still shocked. You took me completely by surprise.â
We hold hands over the table as he stares at me.
